I really enjoyed that. Phones are such a great tool. We are coerced into using them for everything. The struggle is to ensure we control them so they don't control us.
I’d like to echo this! I participate in the Dadscord and said something similar there.
Personally, cutting out social media was a necessity that I’ve never regretted, but re-engaging in spaces like this one, or on discord with a particular end in mind (namely, connecting with like-minded people in the absence of immediate community that is based there) has actually been enriching.
While I still keep an eye on my overall screen-time, I try to look at what I’m actually spending that screen-time doing.
Was I reading a book? Talking to friends I’ve made across the globe because we want to be better parents? If so, I’m going to take that as a net-positive use of my time and try my best to minimize doing it when I’m spending time with loved ones.
Overall, mindful and intentional tool use is my key. Tool being the important part, as it asks “why” when I engage with it.
The Dadscord is a small private community that is part of The New Fatherhood. It's open to all paid subscribers, and is a small, thoughtful corner of the internet where a few hundred dads gather to share the highs and lows of fatherhood and support each other in their growth. I got rid of the Facebook app and it's made a huge difference to me so that makes sense.
Love your term mindful and intentional at the end. That's exactly as it should be.
