I’m quite an open book. But there are still things I don’t feel comfortable sharing with the entire world. So I've been using the private post functionality to send members-only essays to supporters of TNF, in an attempt to create a more intimate space where I can go deeper into my own fatherhood experience. These essays contain some of my most personal thoughts and experiences, ones that I’m not quite ready to plaster across the internet. For access to the entire archive of The New Fatherhood please consider supporting this ongoing project here.

A weekend note for paid subscribers
Hello there. Here's the first-ever "subscriber only" issue. I wrote it late last night, as is normal with these things, and am now editing it in the morning to actually make it an enjoyable read. Hemingway said “the only kind of writing is rewriting”, and that's my experience, for sure. You should see some of the early edits of these things. Actually, …

Meditation for Dads: Your instructions to join the course
Hope you've had a nice weekend. I went to get my first vaccine this morning which was an unexpectedly emotional experience. I'm writing this with a left-arm that feels like it's being pulled down by an invisible weight, so I'll try to keep this brief (but going back and editing I can see I'm almost at 1,000 words. Pith was never a strength of mine…

My recent media diet
Like I said in the first subscriber-only issue, we’re changed by the things we read, watch and listen to. So I thought once in a while I would share some of the media I’ve been consuming, and some personal thoughts, with this small group. Fans of kottke.org…

Filling the purpose bucket
It's normally around this time that The New Fatherhood shows up in your inbox. But this isn't this week’s issue: that’s still cooking. Tomorrow will be all about work and purpose. In the meantime, I wanted to send this essay out to this smaller group…

This is Water
Good morning to you all. I'm here, writing again, after ten days of being "mostly" offline—a little internet browsing, a lot of reading, jotting occasional insights into Notion when graced with their presence, and the longest period of time since 2018 without opening a laptop—which was bliss…

The elephant in the room
The more eagle-eyed amongst you will have noticed something amis on The New Fatherhood. 40 issues, a series of private essays like this one, and close to 50,000 words (damn, that’s almost a book) spent climbing amongst the branches on the broad oak tree we call fatherhood. But there's something I’ve been intentionally avoiding. And it’s about time to get…

Life is long, if you know how to use it
"When considering a new project or opportunity, one of the first questions to ask is “How do I want to spend my days?” Many opportunities seem exciting but actually give you less of the life you want." —James Clear I've been banging on about it for weeks…

How I Learned to Quit
The past is always talking. But you’ll only hear yourself if you really listen. I. It’s been a busy few weeks. Work has picked up, with some fun new projects. The Substack Fellowship was transformational—whilst it became significantly more work than expected, it was a real “get out what you put in” experience. There’ve been a series of late nights at the computer: meeting with clients on the West Coast; writing and polishing up essays for TNF; chipping away at a gigantic boulder of email that continues to grow, a rock worthy of Sisyphus himself…

I'll Dig With It
Listen now (9 min) | The curse of a career spent in advertising is seeing everything as a problem that can easily be solved with the right strategy. Understanding what makes an audience tick; helping them find the necessary McGuffin to provide revelation and transformation needed in their own…
