Dangerous depictions of dad bod contained within. You have been warned.

Some things take a hit when you become a dad. A fitness regime is a predictable casualty. When you start to care for an entirely new body—super cute, incredibly defenceless, comes with complete and entire dependence, available whilst stocks last—your own figure becomes less of a pressing concern.

And you know what doesn’t help? Knowing this is happening whilst the Overton window on “dad bod” is dangerously shiting from what was once a derogatory term for a paunching man in his 40s to now encompass whatever this is:

This photo is—I shit you not—what Jason Momoa, and the majority of the US press, have been referring to as his “dad bod.” I am sorry for anyone whose weekend has been ruined by this information.

It’s … something. So now, with the outline of Aquaman’s physique still lingering in your mind, I want to ask—how are things going with your health and fitness? Are you eating as well, or exercising as much, as you’d like? Are you taking care of yourself, and if so, how? Have you fallen off entirely, bad habits starting to outweigh good ones, but hoping to get back on it when the tiny human you love for can fend for itself a little more?

Remember this is a judgment-free, supportive space—if you’re not doing great, and looking for support, there are dads here who can offer it, a few years ahead of you. Ask away. If you’ve found any websites, apps or podcasts useful—share the wealth with the rest of us. And if you want to celebrate personal success, please do. I could do with inspiration, truth be told.

The only folks not welcome here? Those who wish to perpetuate the clearly dangerous rhetoric and body ideals of the aforementioned Mr Momoa. Not today.

Hello!

I might be late to the party, but as a recent father of 2 (2 y/o and 2 months), fitness has been taking the biggest toll. For me the math simply does not add up - working at least 8h, commuting, making dinner, playing w/ kids, putting them to sleep and then caring for the house (cleaning, laundry, etc) means I never find the time to exercise properly except for some lunch breaks quick joggs.

How do you guys manage to have a kids, care for the family, have a career, hobbies and exercise?

Not sure if this is helpful for anyone but seeing as how most of the comments have revolved around the physical activity itself and scheduling/ routine, I’m going to state the obvious / not so obvious for my fellow brethren. Whether it’s body weight exercises, dumbbells, kettlebells (my favorite bc of simplicity, lack of storage needs, effectiveness), or outdoor activities like hiking or climbing, I think it’s equally important to talk about the conscious choice to improve physical fitness.

Too often I hear other dads talk about the baby comes first and that’s true. But, you as a protector and provider YOU are equally as important. If you are run down, you are less capable of providing the quality of physical and emotional support that’s required from your little one. It’s not selfish to set aside 30 mins a day for yourself. You are important. Your needs are important. Be a dad with vitality. Your kids will notice and love you for it. Plus, it’s a great example to set for your kids in the long term if they see a parent dedicating time and energy towards a fruit bearing endeavor. Good luck and get to it gentlemen!
