My own son’s car scenes with his dad had a new chapter in it last week. When I was a kid, he’d turn onto our street, half a mile from home, and stop. Tell me to come sit in his lap, and he’d let me steer as we finished the drive home. One of my favorite small memories with him. Now, waiting for wife to grab coffee from the food truck, I let my 11month old son stand on my lap, hands on the steering wheel (car in park). I saw the entire vision and my childhood flash in front of me. Love my Dad. Love being a dad.

The one that got me was driving your dad home from his weekly shop, because I didn't see that switch coming in my own life until it had already happened. One day he was the one with both hands on the wheel telling me to buckle up, and then somewhere I wasn't paying attention it quietly reversed. Cars seem to hold this stuff, maybe because you're side by side instead of face to face, so the harder things slip out easier. I keep meaning to ask my dad about the drives he still remembers, before I lose the chance to. Do you think you notice the roles switching while it happens, or does it only ever land looking back?
